Our Story

Nestled in the heart of Ottawa, La Catrina Churros is a family-owned café and the city’s only churreria (churro shop).

It all started with the dream of Ulises Ortega.

After noticing a gap in the Ottawa market for Mexican ‘desserts’ in 2013, he set out to offer the best ones and step forth in a challenging domain to offer Canadians new and tasteful products.

Ulises went to Mexico, where he is from, and was trained by the best churro makers.

Six months later, he and his family returned to Ottawa, purchased a custom-designed “Churro cart”, named “Mr. Churritos”, serving at private events and festivals. Success was immediate – and you can now find the “Mr. Churritos’” churro cart at all of our major festivals.

In order to better serve something simple yet authentic, he and his wife, Diana, leapt at the chance to create a cozy Mexican café. In May 2017, they opened La Catrina Churros, a café that specializes in Churros.

“La Catrina” showcases the culture, the sweet delicacies, the language and “La Catrina” the Dame of Death of Mexico.

It conveys a mortar Mexican styled dessert bar that would offer not only the tastes of Mexico but showcases our special tradition, “Dia de Los Muertos”.
